Maternal mental health disorders account for the number one complication of pregnancy, however, do not always get addressed in routine or follow-up care. Up to 1 in 5 women will experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the perinatal period. Additionally, rates of PTSD are more prevalent in the perinatal period than in the general population. The aim of the presentation will be to provide attendees with a first-hand account of trauma and PTSD during the perinatal period, as well as tips on how to provide trauma-informed care to mothers, babies, and their families, especially those families impacted by trauma. The presentation will then briefly discuss other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and address how to distinguish between common clinical manifestations of these disorders, evidence-based tools commonly used, and how to develop a patient-centered plan of care.
